What are your thoughts on pistol chambered carbines?
Don't own a rifle/carbine yet. Right now I am leaning more towards an AK 47 or the Highpoint 45 carbine.
Mostly it's because of cost, to own and train with. Then the simplicity of choice and mechanism, I get too confused with AR parts and brands and prices.
If it's simple then easier to maintain and clean, I am just lazy at cleaning.

If cost is your concern then 22lr is the way to go. Turners is having a sale on the 15-22.
If you are talking 9mm then there are a few out there that are decent, Or u can get a 9mm AR pattern rifle but everything has its issues and mags, carriers, parts etc. are harder to find.
A pistol caliber will definitely be less effective at certain things than a rifle caliber.

If ammo cost is your concern, get an AK47. It eats anything. Pistol cal carbine are fun, but if I'm going to grab a carbine for HD, it'll be my 5.56, AK or shotgun. I want to make sure my hits count.

Since i'm using a 1911, cal of the carbine will still be a .45 so it will still have a punch to it. And i could interchange platforms and just carry one type of ammo.

I feel like ammo commonality thing is overdone. Your secondary weapons system is just that - secondary. You are unlikely to fire thousands of rounds through it. Buy couple of hundred rounds of quality ammo for it for SHTF, and forget it.

It might be a viable solution since ammo prices is getting out of control for any rifle round. I would want to get something that accepts the same mags as your side arm to keep things simple.

IMHO, for home defense and if it doesn't entail heading outdoors then it would make for an ideal carbine. The controlability with the pistol caliber carbines is next to nothing and the noise is lower compared to a rifle. You also maximize the muzzle velocity coming out of a longer barrel. And of course you have 4-5 points of contact vs. the pistols two.

I first posted on this issue back in 2012 and I wasn't for it for HD purposes, but I have since learn the err of my ways I'm saving to get the 9mm conversion kit for my Tavor.
