Went to the Bow Making class this morning. Arrived @ 930am. I was probably the first one there.
Had a quick 1/2 hr introduction to different bows. One of Chris' friends (Jim? old man with cowboy hat) brought about 1/2 dozen home made bows made out of different types of woods for us to look at.
Then we went on our "nature walk" to look for Wood for our bows. There was probably a total of 30 students in todays class. About 20 minutes into the walk the back half of our group got left behind. There was about 15 ppl in our group. We waited 1/2 hr for Chris Nyerges to come back for us. We even called and left a message on his cellphone. NO one came looking for us.
After 1/2 hr of waiting Jim? took us to look for wood. We ended up chopping wood off some "live" trees. After chopping down some trees Jim? tells us we could get a Citation if the Rangers saw us do that. Gee, thanks for the warning.
Out of the 15 ppl in our group, only 6 were left by the time we made it back to the picnic area. The others got pissed off and went home. By the time we made it back, everyone in Chris' group was already working on their bows. They were issued C clamps and other Carpentry tools to work on there bows. Only thing Chris said to us was, "I wonder where U guys went" and that was it.
Chris didnt bother giving another demo or instruction to the 6 stragglers in my group. We were left to fend for ourselves.
I stood around for 15 minutes watching other people work before I asked a fellow "classmate" for instructions. I was told to strip the bark off my piece of wood. To my dis-satisfaction my piece of wood was dripping wet.
I finally asked Chris for further instructions. After he looked at my piece of wood for curvature, etc. He tells me to start carving the log in half. My log was about 3.5 inches in diameter. For every chop I made with my knife a Layer of Slime came oozing out of the wood. (Oh, everyone in Chris' group got DRY wood to work with)
Chris also tells me my piece of wet wood would eventually warp and twist when it dries and my bow would be unusable.
After struggling to work with wet slimy wood for an 1/2hr I called it quits and went home. Couldn't see myself spending another 3hrs working with this Crap.
I was really looking forward to this class. Unfortunately I got a RAW deal. One of the most Unprofessional and half ass classes I've ever been too. Basically I felt ignored and neglected. I didnt pay $34 for this class to fend for myself OR get class instruction from fellow students. Was hoping I would go home with a home made bow. Not a piece of crap that would eventually Twist and Warp to a point where my bow is Useless.
Class started @ 10.. I bailed @ 12:30.. to say I am Furious with the way I was treated is an understatement. I really feel like I got cheated out of my "education". This whole class was a waste of my F**ken time and money.
I'v already paid for Intensive Survival. Once I take that class I am done with Chris Nyerges.

Sorry to hear about your negative experience, just an idea but perhaps you can let Christopher know and get your money back, apparently others left because they were dissatisfied too. Keeping high energy and high quality classes can be a challenge for some after a while.

Sorry that was your experience. That was definitely a large group. I would definitely send him an e-mail and let him know how you feel.

If Chris is leading an X amount of students into the "Boonies"
He has 2 responsibilities: 1) Nobody gets hurt 2) Nobody gets LOST
He failed on the latter.
If he noticed HALF HIS PAYING CUSTOMERS WERE MISSING
Alarm bells should've rang off in his head. Not continue on his walk with his half of the group.
I'm sure Thousands of others have had a great experience with him. I did also on a previous class. But NOT Yesterday's. That's to bad 'cause I was planning on taking more of his classes with my son.

I wasn't there but I definitely think a much smaller class size would make for a better learning experience.

I talked to Christopher Nyerges about Wckalijkd's bowmaking class bad experience. Chris has refunded wckalijkd's payment to make it right.
