Sounds fun, I always thought that in another life I'd enjoy being a reserve mountain search and rescue guy.

Sounds fun, I always thought that in another life I'd enjoy being a reserve mountain search and rescue guy. Why wait ? Life is too short ! LASD is always looking for good volunteers for search and rescue. You can be either a civilian member or a reserve deputy. Either way, it's pretty cool training (you'll have to grow a mustache though). www.lasdreserve.org/SearchAndRescue.htmCERT members (Community Emergency Response Team) are primarily called out to support and assist first responders, but are trained to deal with what first responders might have to deal with. First class was an overview. This week we'll be looking at fire suppression. So in Christopher's class I learned how to start a fire; this week I'll learn how to put one out. Very Yin and Yang with some Zen thrown in.

This week's class focused on individual and mass casualty triage. This class is becoming more than I expected. We also found out that our last class will be a full, mass casualty exercise at a local college where we will put all our knowledge into practice. We also keep learning what additional items we need to add to our CERT Backpack. We all received a backpack with basic emergency items at the first class. Stan shared a survival catalog from SOS Survival in Van Nuys. Very cool stuff all under one roof. Check it out: www.sosproducts.com/With the events of this past week in Boston and Texas, tonight's class was even more relevant.

The last two weeks have focused on triage and first aid. Tonight's class focused on search and rescue. The two most important points I've learned is how fluid these situations can be and how creative someone has to be when dealing with them. That's why my focus just became purchasing a quality first aid kit. Any suggestions (especially from those of you who have taken Emergency Medicine with Doc) on basic essentials I should always carry. I saw Doc's bag on his post. Very impressive, however, I'm looking for what you've distilled from the class.

Last class before our mock incident this Thursday focused on terrorism and psychological first aid. Stan added a great deal to the terrorism portion of the class. He clarified key points and expanded on concepts he's taught in his SHTF seminar. Will try to take some pics of the drill Thursday. Definitely a class worth taking ! You get a backpack with basic gear, class and study guide, a huge book, and some great instruction from veteran first responders.

Tonight was our last class. It was a full, multiple casualty simulation at Masters College. Boy and Girl Scouts acted as the wounded in a major earthquake. Stan was asked by the group to be the Incident Commander because of his background and leadership. There's a great deal to think of and do in any emergency situation. C.E.R.T. provides a good, basic understanding of many of these scenarios. Strongly suggest C.E.R.T. to anyone, especially if you have a family.

Some of you asked about training in your area. Here's the CERT website for L.A. www.cert-la.com/If you live in another city, contact the city's Emergency Mgt. Office. I know Santa Clarita's next class is in November.
