What kind of training would you recommend for this event?

Having never done this particular event, I can't be sure. They have a group that meets to train in different areas of town. I think the key to this kind of military style fitness is to gradually build up to it. It's basically running/hiking carrying weight, occasionally stopping for push ups, various lifts & challenges etc. I would think a combo of crossfit with some trail running and hiking carrying a pack would do the trick.
I know for sure that most of us can't just roll out of bed and go carry a tree up a mountain with a bunch of strangers.

Btw, has anyone ever looked into adventure racing? It looks pretty awesome: These events combine kayaking, mountain biking, trail running, navigation and often teamwork! www.ccadventure.com/

back in college when Raid de Gauloises was big, i wanted to go into adventure racing. however, i didn't care for the "sport" part of it. i just wanted the experience of the long expedition out in the wild. back then, only teams that did well were military teams. civilians would get their butts kicked. lots if adventure racing now uses too many modern equipment so it's less "adventure" than it used to be... racing on bikes? c'mon how's that adventure racing?
now, i just want to go on a real survival training camp where you leave civilization with minimal gear (1 knife and 1 small survival kit - must procure food, water, and shelter on your own - under guidance of course). there are 2 outfits that i know that have schools around this: Survival Training School of California where you learn to live in the 3 environments (mountains, desert, and valleys) or with Randall Adventure Training with their woodland class at Fort Payne or their jungle class in the Amazon. RAT's Amazon trip is friggin insane. make your way on foot upriver several days, each night building shelter/camp and procuring food/water. last 2 days you build your own raft and float back down to evac point. all the while you could be food for the animals out there hidden in the jungle. lol
if we added guns to that, that would bring my comfort level way up with the wild animals out there lol

Even with the modern equipment, completing an adventure race would be quite a challenge. I recall watching Eco-Challenge Fiji where the all military team completely fell apart because they couldn't work together.
I would also note that survival is in a different category from fitness and adventure racing. Survival involves a lot of skill and craft as opposed to sports & fitness.
Those courses you mentioned sound like awesome adventures! I have a relative in the USAFA who has told me stories about about the course there.
For me personally, my obligations won't allow me to get away for a whole week for any purpose.
You won't need firearms (fingers crossed) in those settings to deal with animals. It's all about your comfort level and getting used to a wild environment.

I have done a couple of adventure races - mainly the military oriented kind, and they were always smokers but also a blast (never had bikes either) lots of orienteering, trail running/rucking, some climbing, and one that had about 5 miles of white water rafting on it. Something that incorporated shooting or "missions" like a lot of the Infantry competitions I did while Active duty would be really very cool.

Nothing against cycling per-say, but when it comes to the adventure races I have done, they have had more of a military emphasis, and a bicycle is very rarely standard issue. I have done triathalons as well where biking is a big portion of it, but I think of those as a bit different than an adventure race.

THIS^^^^ nothing against biking either, but like hell i'm gonna shave my legs and wear tight biking shorts. i keed i keed... i just don't see biking as having any tactical advantage except for endurance and breathing which i get more pratical practice from running/hiking/trail blazing while i'm lost in the garden.
