When it comes to load bearing equipment (LBE) I have owned and tried almost all that is out there (one piece chest rigs, load-bearing vests, plate carriers, H-harnesses, etc.) They each have their pros/cons but I'll tell you what I went with and why. I currently use the MFR-10 split front chest rig from CPgear.com from Canada. www.cpgear.com/StoreBox/disb/7009_4.htmHere are my reasons: *I was going to go with pouches directly on my plate carrier but there are times when you need one and not the other, also it makes it a challenge to shoot from the prone as your magazine pouches are in the worst place when you are down on the ground. When conducting a reconnaissance you need just the rig and you can ditch your armor to be lighter and quieter. *One piece chest rigs are harder to don/doff; for the prone position you are stuck with the same problem as the plate carrier unless you take it completely off which is tactically a no-no and takes precious time before and after. *A two piece/split front chest rig was the solution and I originally looked at the Tactical Tailor MAV 2 piece. You unbuckle the front to go prone and you can still keep it on. The chest rig alone is cooler than wearing a vest or plate carrier. * I found the MFR-10 on yahoo and it was actually cheaper ($44.50) than the MAV and has better and more features. At first I was concerned that the MFR-10 was too big as they offer a narrower one (MFR-8) but once I filled the inside of the MFR-10 (it's made of two layers closed with very strong Velcro) with things like first aid items, rations, etc. it filled out and works well over my plate carrier. *You can get the MFR-10 in 5 different colors and patterns but I went with Coyote. **Edited to add that CP Gear is now selling the Tactical Tailor 2 piece MAV for only like a $1.00 more now. If it comes to down to your choice color pick either one.

Thanks for ur endorsement Stan, I'll order that rig soon as I did notice your setup. I have just switched over to a BFG LMAC In Coyote Brown with SAPI plates , Ill run it during another 303 class and if that doesn't work switch over to your recommendation.
BTW I like how your rig is set up like those old Rhodhesian / South African rigs

For anyone planning on taking Shotgun 101/202: make sure you use Loctite on EVERYTHING. The 12-gauge recoil sent all of my "accessories" flying... literally.

I run a TT MAV 1piece and the main problem is what Stan has mentioned above putting it on and off can be a pain, since buckles are on the back, and the straps predictably get twisted. I like the price of the rig Stan suggests and might give it a try.

I've been using that chest rig Stan recommended. Great piece of equipment. Wished I had talked to Stan first. Would have saved myself some money!

Placed my order today with CPGear for the Tactical Tailor 2pc MAV. Hopefully i'll receive it before May 12th.
Shipping is $10 from Canada to Los Angeles.
I think they charge in CDN, not USD but the exchange rate is basically 1:1.
I'll transfer all my gear from my Condor MCR1 to the TT MAV. I'll post some pics once i get it.

Stan,
from looking through the boards here you seem to be in favor of for good enough equipment - for those of us on a budget. what are your thoughts on the Military load bearing vests avail. on ebay/craigslist for under 20.00?
and i noticed your rifle had a plain nylon 3 point sling are these good enough also?
Thanks

Thanks Good questions; you can definitely spend a fortune in this field if you don't be careful. I think its too easy to recommend the best, top of the line gear but the majority of us can not afford stuff like that. USGI load bearing vests (LBVs). Those will definitely do the job but are too overt for SHTF-type situations. I've actually started moving toward a micro-type rig that has just the bare minimum of what you need. I prefer the 3 point sling amongst all others; I find them to have more pros than cons than the others. I like the Blackhawk swift sling, its the thickest variety I have yet found and own three of them.
