hey all, just putting it out there...
RAT (Randall's Adventure Training and makers of the ESEE knives) has a 3 day survival class in socal. 2 of their instructors live here and have held 2 classes already.
they will teach: - proper knife, saw, machete, ax skills. - building fire - building shelter - finding water and purification - building traps - signaling - more survival skills
class is schedule from 8/31 to 9/2 weekend. updated: class is 9/28 to 9/30 weekend now.
cost is $300.00.
and yes, you will be in the outdoors the entire time. i'm waiting on the equipment list they want us to have. this is NOT the class where you leave with only a knife and empty water container and must learn how to really survive. you can bring your camping gear and food to keep you in your comfort zone. you will still learn and participate in the skills classes.
if you are interested, pm me and i will get you more info and put you in touch with the instructors to set it up.
i'm going.. i'll do a detailed aar with pictures for you guys.
yeah i know.. no firearms or shooting of any kind... bummer

Looks super fun. For us home/workbound folks we can live vicariously through you.

Are there classes that teach urban survival skills for SHTF moments? It would seem more applicable for people like me who only see the wildereness on my screen saver.

There are urban SERE classes that teach you stuff like escaping from captivity and picking locks.

Urban survival = being homeless on Skid Row.

LOL i'll be bunking with you then... actually you can, but you will have to hike from the parking lot back to the camp... i think 4 miles each way. these classes are introductory classes so they don't force you to do anything you aren't comfortable with... the advance classes in the jungle is something else tho

There are urban SERE classes that teach you stuff like escaping from captivity and picking locks. Realistically speaking, I could see a 9.0 earthquake hitting OC where I live and having all 3 major Freeways connecting the county to the rest of the country knocked out for a few weeks. That being the case, I could see us bugging in more than bugging out to any mountains while we wait for FEMA or whoever to decide that they should send some help. So, I'm just not sure how applicable those wilderness survival classes will be.

It all depends on you: Some people do this type of training b/c they actually spend a lot of time the back country. Others do it for fun or for a challenge.
If you don't enjoy it and don't think you'll ever need it, then there are a million other ways to spend your time.
Personally I just wish I could spend more time in the wilderness period.

I hope it didn't sound like I was bagging on those people who were taking those courses, because that wasn't my intent. I was just continuing my thought on my question about urban survival classes that's all. I would take the wilderness classes too if I had the time, but that's one commodity that I don't have much of.

Personally I just like to go backpacking and enjoy the wilderness rather than surviving in it, but I would probably enjoy a course like this.

I think this sounds fun. I'd like info on the class location. Basically, which part of SoCal?

it's going to be held in the wrightwood mountains. exact location is not yet published, but i think it's the lytle creek campsite.... i know they camp there alot for quick overnighters.
one of the instructors has a gossamer gear riksak that he uses... total pack weight is.. get this... 3 lbs including his meal which is over 1 lb chunk of ham. dude just makes shelter out there and sleeps by the fire. makes or gets everything else he needs/wants from mother nature...
