In researching what boots I should consider buying, I've learned there a ton to choose from. I've also learned they seem to be one piece of gear that isn't discussed much. Considering what an important piece of gear they are, what boots are you using or suggest I seriously look at for training ?

Good topic:
You have two major types to choose from:
1. Stitched soles like the military classic Danner, Matterhorn, etc.
2. Directly molded soles which are very popular these like Oakley, Blackhawk Warrior, Hi-Tec, to name a few.
The stitched sole variety tend to be heavier but will last longer and you can always resole them which is cheaper than buying a new boot and your break in time on the second go around will be less.
Molded sole boots often feel like running shoes, are light, comfortable but typically do not last as long. Maybe 6 - 12 months of hard use.
The thing that takes the most life away from your boots is when they get wet and then dry out...and then repeat. Our jungle boots in the Phillipines lasted about 6 months because of this, they would eventually get jungle rot and both the leather or the canvas would tear.
Bottom Line: If you are looking for a good deal right now on a pair of SHTF boots the USMC RATs boots are on sale at many places including LA police gear to name a few as low as $40 and these used to retail for almost $200. These boots will last a long, long time.

Thanks Stan. Great points to consider. The Bates USMC RAT boots are a great deal. Almost bought them until I found out they were recalled by the USMC / Bates because a large percentage were falling apart (see the link below). The remaining boots are considered "factory seconds." That's why they're going out at $39.99. No way of knowing how they'll turn out. USMC replaced them with the Danner RAT boots..$350.00. Any other suggestions ? www.marinecorpstimes.com/news/2011/03/marine-boot-defect-rat-recall-033011w/

It's not so much the $40. I don't want to wear a heavier boot than needed. I want to stay as light as possible with all my gear.

What worked best for me are none leather boots. i like cloth nylon boots or suede which feels the most comfortable and light weight. The leather ones aren't flexible enough.

I've been testing a pair of Lowa Zephyr Desert, and while they may be a tad small for me they feel very nice and light.
