Hi Stan,
Sorry to bother you with this questions but I don't know of anyone more qualified to answer them. I get my first Glock 17 in a few days and wanted to know the following:
Should I get a holster that fits both the pistol with the mounted flashlight or just the pistol? This will be used for home defense so I'm leaning towards one with a light.
Which light do you recommend?
I figured that rather then spending hours on the forums trying to figure this out, I should ask you. I completely understand if you don't feel comfortable making recommendations or are not in a position to answer my questions.
We'll see you this Saturday for the Pistol 101 class.
Thanks again!
Roberto

Hello Roberto,
No bother at all.
This is partially a tough question.
70% I would say go for it and get a Surefire X300 series weapons mounted light (WML) and be done with it. It is considered the best pistol WML in the market; buy once cry once. I have had WMLs fail or get finicky with dust etc. If you shop hard enough like on eBay you can find one for discount. If you can get the DEVGROUP (DG) pressure switch go ahead and do so, it really is a great addition and makes it very intuitive.
Additionally you will have to find a holster to accommodate this and the combo of Glock 17 and X300 will be very easy to find. BladeTech and Safariland both make holsters that will take the G17 with X300 mounted. You will pay more money to do so but it will be a one time investment.
30%: Currently I am behind and do not have a light bearing holster. This is mainly due to cost and my draw stroke with the G17 slick is great and I would have to relearn a new draw stroke. I currently use a Blackhawk Serpa and a light holder separately, not optimum but I retain my draw stroke so for the day time I am good to go. Everything is a compromise. I currently use the insight WX150 and haven't yet shopped for a light bearing holster that would take the combo. I wouldn't want to pay the big money for a light bearing holster for a light that I find adequate but not really in love with. So I am saving my pennies for a Surefire X300 and then one of the nice holsters to take it. The use of a soft nylon holster with thumb snap for the new combo is out of the question, those will not do compared to the current composite holsters. (I learned that the Safariland light bearing holsters are spec'd for a particular pistol model and a number of different lights but no guarantee if they would take my WX150).
Once you get a light bearing holster (none of the good ones are cheap) you are now married to the triad thus my hesitancy towards converting. In a few years the SF X300 will be old news, there will be a new WML which will probably be physically different enough to require a new holster, then your $100 holster is old news too! The civilian arms race is expensive.
This was such a good question and I think I will post it!
