I am new at shooting and maintaining gear, and because of my laziness to clean my kimber 1911 custom ll, i noticed some signs of rust on the slide and the bottom corner of the grip. it is basically located where my sweaty palms always came in contact with the metal. please advice.
currently I have been using ballistol for cleaning and lube.

wd40 and steel wool works for the cheap end of things. otherwise, you can use what tool machinery guys use like topsaver.
afterwards, just coat with some bluing or that birchwood/casey back to black pen thing to protect the bare metal. you could always get it recoated as well. tons of options from parkerizing, bluing, duracoat, etc...

I wouldn't use any kind of metal brush or abrasives, just a nylon GI "toothbrush" or even hard bristle dental toothbrush and some CLP or other oil. It will come off. The use of any metal abrasives will only open up the steel to more rust. I would agree that getting your gun refinished in NP3, hard chrome, cerakote, gunkote, etc. is the solution though. If you like the metallic look NP3 is the end all-be all finish with nickel and teflon PFTE suspended molecules, it looks dull grey. For any other color like black or green something like Gunkote is good or even consider black nitride. I'll get back later with more information.

I used froglube on my new Japanese iron kitchen knives when the wife left them in the sink for 10hrs. Took it right off after I heated and soaked it for a bit. All of my guns and knives have been treated with this stuff.
