Sorry you missed it. Anyone remember the name of the wood we used for the hand & bow drills? I believe it's called Mulefat.

Thanks. The other good lesson was the two most important untacticool tools: pruning shears and a folding saw. Yesterday was interesting and felt like a sampler plate. I feel like one could easily spend a lifetime learning that stuff in depth. When I was trying to remember which wood it was, I came across this www.primitiveways.com/Fire%20Making%20Materials.html Who would've thought it was so complicated? I also found Jim Robertson's (the fire guru) classes as well. aboriginalskills.com/Lastly I found the tracking classes that the Vietnam Vet was talking about: www.earthskills.com/index.htmlI don't foresee myself becoming a mountain man, but I do hope to gain a greater appreciation for my surroundings next time I'm in the wild.

Well said, and absolutely true. Those are highly perishable skills one has to apply over and over to really grasp. I know Christopher has been leading classes for over 35 years. So think about how many times he's demonstrated and practiced each of those skills. I've accepted I'm too old to sit there and try to start a fire with a bow. I'm a sheepdog; so I'm strongly leaning towards the Weaponry Workshop on 13/ 4/13.

I just finished watching Gary's video, "Acquire Fire." Gary demonstrates all the skills and tools he, Christopher, and Jim talked about Saturday. Do watch it. Great follow-up. Gary also talks about different woods you can use to make the hand and bow drills.

Why does he remind me of Crocodile Dundee:

One difference between JEST or SERE and the just finished SHTF course was that no SIMIAN was harmed or consumed during the course. BTW STan Politican Correctness now dictate that the native tribesmen who trained you are now referredbto as AFRO -Filipinos and not Negritos...

Crocodile Dundee only carried one knife. Christopher's philosophy is, "You can never carry enough knives." Then let him show you what he can do with them. It was a great learning experience spending the day with Stan and other TASC alumni. I can't wait for the weapons class.

...and of course his trusty pruning shears, which he uses way more often than a knife.

"I go camping every weekend..." OK. Let me go out on a short limb here. He: 1. He doesn't have a girlfriend. 2. He's not married. 3. He doesn't have any kids. Every once in a while I think of those days; then my "honey do" list and my kids' schedules hit me right between the eyes.

Thanks for posting. Interesting concept. Christopher also has dirttime.com with other instructors.
